10 Steps to Success - Year 1 - Maths

We’ve broken the year’s key learning into 10 skills. If children can master these in year 1, they will make a flying start to year 2. They won’t necessarily be mastered in order.

Skill 1

Count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals; count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10.






Skill 2

Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number.

Examples

"97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102

“103, 102, 101, 100, 99, 98"








Skill 3

Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number.






Skill 4

Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number.






Skill 5

Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number.






Skill 6

Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number.






Skill 7

Recognise and create repeating patterns with objects and shapes.





Skill 8

Recall and reason with bonds up to 20 in several forms.

(e.g. 9 + 7 = 16; 16 – 7 = 9; 7 = 16 – 9)






Skill 9

Recognise, find and name a half and quarter as equal parts of an object, shape or quantity.






Skill 10

Read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (-) and equals (=) signs.
